WILMINGTON – Andy Riesenberg has been named the next head coach of the Wilmington College volleyball program.

“We are excited to have Andy [Riesenberg] join us as our head volleyball coach,” Vice President for Athletic Administration and Director of Athletics said Terry Rupert, the vice president for Athletic Administration and director of Athletics. “Andy’s experience both at the collegiate and club levels has us excited in the direction Andy will lead this program.”

Riesenberg comes to Wilmington from NCAA Division I institution Southern Illinois University where he served as an assistant coach with the Salukis. He assisted the head coach in all aspects of the program including practice, training, scouting, game prep & film and recruiting. Additionally, he worked primarily with defense as well as serving and mentored two Salukis to finish second in both blocks per set and aces per set in the Missouri Valley Conference.

Along with coaching at Southern Illinois, Riesenberg has served as the lead trainer and a club coach for Mintonette Sports, a volleyball club based in Columbus. He has coached the 16 Open age group the past three years at Mintonette, and is currently a lead tier trainer and coach to all 27 teams (275 athletes).

He assisted in winning USAV 16 Open National Championship this past season, and was most recently an assistant on the No. 1-ranked 16 Open team nationally by AES Power Rankings that finished with a record of 38-3. He helped lead their teams to 15 nationally qualifying bids in both 2016 and 2017.

Riesenberg also coached the nationally ranked No. 2 team in the country in the Open 15s Division which won back to back Mid-East qualifiers, and finished second in the country (Open Division) in 2016.

“I’m very excited about this opportunity with Wilmington College and cannot wait to get started,” Riesenberg said. “From the time I met with the search committee, through my meetings and conversations with Dr. Rupert, I just knew this would be a great fit for the both of us. I would like to thank Dr. Rupert, his staff and the players for taking the time to get to know me, and for believing in what we can accomplish moving forward.”

Prior to Southern Illinois, Riesenberg made stops at Xavier University (2017) and Ohio University (2015-16) as an assistant coach. He was part of Ohio’s 2015 Mid-American Conference (MAC) Tournament championship team that upset No. 10-ranked University of Kentucky during the regular season.

Riesenberg mentored American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) First Team All-Region and Honorable Mention All-Region honorees during his time in Athens.

From 2012 to 2015, Riesenberg was the head coach at Lake Erie College (LEC) in Painesville. He led LEC to its best stats in seven years, holding records in the top three spots in every category since the school entered the Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (GLIAC). He also guided the team to All-GLIAC Academic Excellence in 2012, 2013 and 2014 with an average grade point average of 3.8.

During his tenure in Cleveland, Riesenberg was also the Director of Volleyball for SPIRE Institute in Geneva, Ohio, running the club, individual and team practices, as well as tournaments for over 1,500 athletes and coaches that were attending by 3,000 parents and spectators each weekend.

Riesenberg also made stops as an assistant coach at Wright State University (2009-11) and the University of Southern Indiana (2008-09). He recruited and developed five players who finished in the top 10 in career statistics at Wright State as well as aiding Southern Illinois to a No. 8 ranking in the country in blocks per set (2.43).

Originally from Cincinnati, Riesenberg earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and advertising from Mount St. Joseph University in 2003.

Riesenberg, who will have secondary duties as assistant director of athletic communications, begins his tenure at Wilmington Feb. 1.
