Gardening in March
March is the month that begins the display of spring bulbs. To ensure a long and spectacular display next spring, start a list of what bulbs bloom in your garden this season. Be sure to tuck that list in your Garden Journal! Note exactly when each plant blooms, its location in the garden, and what colors are springing up. In late summer and fall, when the bulb catalogs arrive, you will be able to look for species and cultivars that will add color when and where you need it most.
Proper shearing multiplies shrub blooms
If you have flowering shrubs in your landscape, now is a good time to give them some “tough love”. It’s easy for you to double or triple the number of blooms on your flowering shrubs. All it takes is regular shearing once a year, particularly when the plant is young, along with regular feeding. There’s a technique to doing this, and a reason it works so well.
The Wilmington Writers
When filing/archiving some donations at the genealogy library I held in my hand a booklet of 65 pages. It had been compiled by the Wilmington Writers – a group first begun in 1972. This particular item was compiled and published in 1998. I briefly leafed through the pages and found the individual contributions to be a wonderful insight into some local people. Many of the contributors are now deceased but I wish to share one of their stories. I am sure our readers will recognize many of the names.
Christmas — 100 years ago
The following information was found in the Wilmington News Journal Dec. 24, 1920. One column was titled “Christmas.” Relevant information from that column applies yet today. Christmas brings the children to the front. Christmas tenders hearts and makes them childlike. Christmas is the end of the year – a time to look at our successes and failures. Christmas demands action before it repays enjoyment. Christmas marks the anniversary of the birth of our Savior – the great Giver of Gifts. He gave Himself for the world - the giving of self is essential in both world and heavenly success.
