Domestic Violence Task Force plans sexual assault awareness activity

April is sexual assault awareness month.

National statistics show that every two minutes, someone in America is sexually assaulted; one in six women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetime, over 70 percent of victims know their attackers and it is estimated that 60 percent of sexual assaults are not reported to the police (Rainn — Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network).

The Clinton County Domestic Violence Task Force plans to kick off a community awareness project entitled “Walk In My Shoes” on Monday. Beginning Monday and running through April 28, survivor stories attached to donated shoes will be distributed to various agencies and companies in Wilmington. Community members are encouraged to look for these displays and take a few minutes to read the stories.

In addition to providing services to domestic violence victims, the Clinton County Domestic Violence Task Force also provides services to sexual assault victims, maintains a 24-hour crisis line, offers support groups, information and referrals, parenting classes, legal and court advocacy, offender programs, anger management programs and teen services.

If you or someone you know needs assistance, contact the agency at 383-3285 or 1-866-296-5415.
