Bo the punk-rock connoisseur Band has former Michigan coach scratching his head COLUMBUS (AP) - What's brewing today with the 2006 Ohio State Buckeyes ...
BUCKEYE BUZZ: Glenn 'Bo' Schembechler appreciates the irony that there's a punk-rock band called the 'Dead Schembechlers.'
'Holy smokes, I couldn't believe it,' a smiling Schembechler told The Columbus Dispatch. 'They're all dressed like Woody. I think it's crazy.'
The real Schemechler almost made the band's name prophetic. He had two heart attacks and two quadruple bypasses before more cardiac problems a couple of weeks ago that required surgeons to implant a defibrillator-pacemaker in his chest.
'The medical people here will tell you it's a miracle I'm alive,' said the 77-year-old, who coached Michigan from 1969-89. 'How many guys you know had a heart attack 36 years ago and are still alive? Name one.'
Schembechler watched the Wolverines' narrow 34-26 win over Ball State last Saturday from the press box. A loss by the Wolverines to the 33 1/2-point underdogs might have been enough to push the old coach over the edge.
As for the band, which calls itself 'The Best Damn Punk Band in the Land,' it has four members, each of whom wears scarlet windbreakers, glasses, short-sleeved white shirts and black ties - just like Woody Hayes.
Judging from listings on a tongue-in-cheek Web site - www.deadschembechlers.com - the group's songs include 'Bomb Ann Arbor Now' and several other graphic titles you'll never hear on commercial radio.
