Party with a Purpose: Saving African American women from breast cancer

Did you know that while more Caucasian women get breast cancer, far more African American women die from this disease? This stunning fact is why Premier Community Health created “My Sister’s Keeper.”

This innovative program offers African American women free “education parties” complete with invitations, goody bags, snacks, decorations and door prizes. At the end of one of these informative celebrations, women can either sign up for a free mammogram, or sign a pledge to have one done. Free mammograms are available to women who do not have heath insurance, or have high co-pays.

Premier Community Health can help women with transportation to mammograms and support, if they are fearful of the test. “We want as many African American women, especially over age 50, to have a mammogram every year,” said Tanya Mason, the program coordinator. “Having regular mammograms find cancers early, when they are more easily cured.” Once part of Premier Community Health’s mammography program, women receive a reminder each year to have this important test.

The program, which is funded by the Avon Foundation and the Susan G. Komen for the Cure, Greater Cincinnati Affiliate, is now accepting reservations for party dates. If you are part of a group of African American women who would like to “Party with a Purpose”, call Premier Community Health at 937-227-9400.

Premier Community Health is a member of Premier Health Partners. Premier Community Health focuses on prevention, early detection and disease management, especially in issues around cancer, diabetes, and heart and lung health.
