Homeless shelter receives grant

GARY HUFFENBERGER
Staff Writer

The Clinton County Homeless Shelter recently received notification that they have been awarded a $51,400 grant for renovations to the new Annex.

This grant is from the Emergency Shelter Grant Discretionary Program, State of Ohio, Office of Housing and Community Partnership. In addition, our local corporation, Timber Tech along with Crane Fencing Solutions and The Crane Group donated an additional $20,000 and Crane Fencing and Timber Tech have partnered, and employees of both companies are volunteering their time and talents to assist with the renovation of the home at 30 Gallup Street that was so generously donated to the Clinton County Homeless Shelter.

Other community partners helping with the Annex include: The Matrka Family, The Equipment Superstore, Pastor Elizabeth Looney and the Wilmington Church of God, Lowes, Tag Williams General Contractor, AVI Food Systems, City of Wilmington Street Department, M.R. Rose Excavating, Daylight Donuts, Calvary Baptist Church, and other community partners.

“I am just overwhelmed” said Denise Stryker-Grant when told of the news. “These funds and the volunteer labor will help us succeed in our goal to have the new Men’s Annex open by early 2008.”

The new Annex will help the Shelter to expand their role in assisting those less fortunate here in Clinton County, allowing men to be housed separately from women and families who will remain housed in the original Shelter.

Stryker-Grant continued, “Dr. Matrka and his family have been volunteering their time and talents towards the betterment of our facilities for some time now. This infusion of new volunteer assistance and funds could not have come at a better time.”

Several work days have already been spent on the new Annex. Along with these volunteers, some prior and current residents turned out to help. “This is most gratifying” said Stryker-Grant, “when we see our success stories returning to continue to give back.”

All community volunteers are needed to help complete this project.

I've seen Wilmington, Ohio stories on CNN. I'm on a fixed income, and I don't have money to send.
But, I would like to offer my expertise of getting one of the thousands jobs at www.usajobs.gov. If Andrew Michael, former Air Force, and other residents would like to apply for jobs at www.usajobs.gov, I would give them guidance after reviewing their resume, i.e. I recommend that Andrew Michael apply for civilian jobs with the Air Force and VA because he has training in the Air Force which has the skills sets that they are recruiting for. I would give my expertise to one person and they would share the information with other residents. I'm sorry that I can only help one person at a time, but I'm suffering from lower back pain, and I cannot sit in a chair long.
Friends helping Friends. Neighbores helping neighbores.
