Thirty more ABX Air workers have been given permanent layoff notices, the company said Tuesday, as operations at the DHL Air Park continue to spiral down. The displaced workers include four industrial cleaners, four senior sort maintenance mechanics and four senior equipment maintenance mechanics. Also losing their jobs are three part-time commercial driver’s license (CDL) shuttle drivers and three part-time industrial cleaners. Two benefits coordinators received notice, as did two lead industrial cleaners, two material recycling workers and two part-time non-CDL drivers. Rounding out this latest series of layoffs are a lead equipment maintenance mechanic, a line service technician, a non-powered equipment mechanic and a senior painter/refinisher.
Altogether, close to 10,000 jobs based in or near Wilmington are projected to be wiped out by the decision of DHL’s profitable parent corporation to end both air and ground service in the U.S. domestic shipping market. Deutsche Post World Net is the multinational parent corporation of DHL Express Global. On Nov. 10, Deutsche Post World Net CEO Frank Appel said of the decision to exit the U.S. domestic shipping market, “We have come to the conclusion that this is the right thing to do for the company.” Previously, DHL officials have said they hoped to reach a deal with UPS by the end of 2008 for DHL’s international express shipping to and from the United States. As of presstime Tuesday, there’s been no announcement of a deal being struck between the two giant shipping rivals. If DHL and UPS don’t reach an agreement on DHL’s international express shipping and if DHL chooses to locate the hub for its international air freight at the air park in Wilmington, an estimated 800 or 1,000 air park jobs could be saved.
