WILMINGTON — The suspect in a Wednesday afternoon incident is now in the custody of U.S. Marshals.

Acting Chief Ron Cravens of the Wilmington Police Department told the News Journal that Shaun McGee, 37, of Wilmington has been charged with possession of a firearm by a prohibited person in U.S. District Court of Southern Ohio in Cincinnati.

McGee was arrested in late afternoon after authorities responded to a possible theft.

Due to the suspect’s “lengthy criminal history” as Craven described it, authorities obtained a search warrant of McGee’s residence at 111 E. Locust St. in Wilmington. The building there is a duplex apartment.

In 2010 McGee was charged with nine Level 4 offenses in New York Western District Court — five for firearm offenses and three drug-related, according to the PACER (Public Access to Court Electronic Records) website of the Federal Judiciary.

He pled guilty to one count of a knowingly making a firearm violation and “possession of a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking” and was sentenced to 37 months in prison.

Craven wanted to give credit to how well the officers did on the scene and he expressed appreciation for the assistance of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the Warren County Drug Task Force and the Clinton County joint SWAT team.
