XENIA — One person died in aircraft crash at the Greene County Airport early Tuesday evening.
The Greene County Coroner was called to the scene, and the National Transportation Safety Board told WDTN the pilot did not survive the crash. There was nobody else on board, the TV station tweeted.
The call came in just before 6 p.m. Tuesday, according to WDTN.
The NTSB took the investigation over from the Ohio State Highway Patrol. The NTSB said it will be back at the airport Wednesday morning and that daylight is most important in the investigation.
Weather conditions at the time of the crash were overcast but were not enough to obstruct the view of a pilot, said WDTN Chief Meteorologist Brian Davis.
One witness said the plane’s left wing dipped and did a barrel roll into the trees.
“I saw a low airplane going northbound around the airport going real low, making a wide left-hand turn,” said Terry, who did not want to give his last name to WDTN.
The plane was at the end of the runway in an embankment, said photographer Mike Burianek.
Officials also investigated a crash at the airport in October 2014. A plane propeller struck an object, causing it to veer and crash off of the runway. Investigators of the crash said the pilot was taking part in a training program and was uninjured.
