Ex-inmate: Guards kept inmates in cell with toilet spilling

COLUMBUS (AP) — A former central Ohio inmate says guards taunted inmates when a jail toilet overflowed, leaving him covered in sewage.

The Columbus Dispatch reports that Robert Krutko’s federal case against Franklin County and several officials began Tuesday in Columbus.

Krutko says he was asleep on the “ice cold” floor of a holding cell in 2009 when a toilet overflowed. He says Franklin County jail guards refused to let anyone out for nearly half an hour until inmates began scooping sewage underneath the door.

Assistant County Prosecutor Scott Sheets says there’s no evidence of the event and that it would’ve been documented. Sheets has asked the judge to rule in favor of the defendants.

The judge says he will consider the request and wishes to hear some of the defendants’ case.
