YELLOW SPRINGS, Ohio (AP) — An 18-year-old died in an apparent drowning in a closed nature preserve in western Ohio, authorities said.

The Miami Township Fire-Rescue Department reported getting an emergency call at around 2 p.m. Sunday. A Yellow Springs police officer responded and found the victim in water under a log at the Glen Helen Nature Preserve, some 20 miles east of Dayton.

Authorities says the officer jumped into the water and pulled the victim to shore, then started resuscitation efforts. First responders from the township arrived and continued resuscitation efforts, but the victim was pronounced dead at the scene. His name wasn’t immediately released.

The Dayton Daily News reports that the victim was in the water at The Cascades, site of a scenic waterfall in the preserve.
