WILMINGTON — The internationally acclaimed Jazz Ambassadors of Washington, D.C., will continue its long tradition of presenting free public performances when it plays The Murphy Theatre at 3 p.m. Sunday, July 3. The Wilmington performance is sponsored by the News Journal, and tickets are available Wednesday, June 15.

The Jazz Ambassadors group is the official touring big band of the U.S. Army. Formed in 1969, this 19-member ensemble has received acclaim at home and abroad, performing America’s original art form — jazz.

“We had a full house last year, and we are so excited to have them here for our nation’s birthday party,” said Maretta Alden, executive director of the theater. “We are honored to have them return to the Murphy Theatre.”

Concerts by the Jazz Ambassadors are programmed to entertain all types of audiences. The band’s diverse repertoire includes big-band swing, bebop, Latin, contemporary jazz, standards, popular tunes, Dixieland, vocals, and patriotic selections, many of which are written or arranged by the members of the Jazz Ambassadors.

The Jazz Ambassadors group has appeared in all 50 states, Canada, Mexico, Japan, India, and Europe. Recent notable performances include concerts at the Toronto Jazz Festival, the Kennedy Center Honors, and the Jazz Education Network Conference. Gordon Goodwin, Bobby Shew, Ernie Watts, and the Dave Brubeck All-Star Quintet are just a few of the jazz artists who have shared a stage with the group.

The band’s rigorous touring schedule and reputation have earned it the nickname “America’s Big Band.”

Free tickets are limited to four per household and must be picked up before 2:15 p.m. the day of the concert, which is Sunday, July 3. After 2:15 p.m., tickets that have not been claimed will be released to those waiting for open seats.
