WILSON TOWNSHIP — A Gleason Road resident died after being hit by a pickup truck while getting her mail Friday.

According to Col. Brian Prickett of the Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, 79-year-old Helen Hess crossed the street to get her mail while a pickup truck approached her reportedly at 50 miles per hour.

According to police reports, the driver of the pickup truck, Michael Ellis, told sheriff’s deputies he saw her and believed she would get out of the right lane before he reached her. Ellis told deputies that when he got closer he realized she wouldn’t be out of the way, and he hit the brakes but wasn’t able to stop in time, striking her.

Hess was transported by the Sabina, Richland, Wayne, Wilson Joint Fire District life squad and transferred to Miami Valley Hospital, where she later died.

Prickett said the CCSO is still investigating the incident and will present evidence to prosecutors who will determine whether any charges will be filed.
