Blanchester High School mourns loss of teacher

BLANCHESTER — Students and staff learned Friday morning that their high school’s family and consumer sciences teacher Margaret Shepherd had died.

Hired in 2001 by Blanchester Local Schools, Shepherd called BHS Principal Rick Hosler on Wednesday to get a substitute teacher to cover for her Thursday and Friday.

“That was the last time I talked with her,” Hosler said Friday afternoon.

Shepherd, 61, went in for medical tests on Wednesday and it was determined she needed to go back for more medical attention, said Hosler.

Blanchester school officials received a phone call Friday morning concerning Shepherd’s passing, and an assembly was held in the gymnasium later in the morning to announce the sad news. During the assembly, a moment of silence was held.

Counselors from Blanchester and other area schools came to BHS to assist for anyone wishing to meet and talk.

Hosler plans to have clergy and more counselors at the school next week.

Just last Thursday, Oct. 13, Shepherd’s birthday was observed with a cake at school.

“I would call her the consummate professional. She was always willing to give extra time for students. She was probably the kindest, gentlest lady I’ve ever met. It’s a tremendous loss for us,” said the BHS principal.
