WILMINGTON — After completing their first 100 days of school, kindergarten students attending East End Elementary School gave the appearance of looking not only older, but also wiser beyond their years.

According to kindergarten teacher Mrs. Donna Adams, leading up to the 100-day celebration, students were busy learning how to read, write and count to 100. They honed their math skills by learning addition and subtraction and by counting objects with 1:1 correspondence, thus, understanding that 2 cookies = 2 or that 5 raisins = 5.

Once students were able to independently count to 100, they earned the opportunity to sign their names to a special wall chart.

Students commemorated this educational benchmark by celebrating the number 100. They enjoyed snacks made with 100 treats, filled their paper gumball machines with 100 gumballs, created artwork using the numbers 1-0-0, did exercises for 100 seconds, wrote 100 words, and listened to several 100th-day stories.

Students even donned the hair, makeup and fashions most generally sported by someone celebrating 100 years rather than 100 days.
