BLANCHESTER — Don Gephart was appointed to Blanchester Village Council during Thursday night’s council meeting. He will fill the seat previously held by J.L. Runk, who died on March 3.

The first motion was made by council member Tyler McCollister and seconded by Lori Byrom. She stated that council had been interviewing to fill in the position.

“He (Gephart) has been on several committees and he’s very well-known and respected,” said Byrom. “We thought he would be an asset for us and he would be a good fit.”

Gephart, a retired post office worker, was out of town and not in attendance at the meeting Thursday, but he expressed over the phone how pleased he was to be appointed.

“I’m looking forward to working for this and I’ll do everything in my ability to be all I can be,” said Gephart.

He is also on the ballot for the Nov. 7 for Blanchester Council, running as an independent.

Also during the council meeting:

• Mary Davis of the American Legion Auxiliary Unit 179 spoke to council about Beautify Blanchester on Earth Day.

She would like to see people — high school seniors, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts, and other volunteers and organizations of the community — work on designated projects ranging from weed pulling to picking up trash. It would be done during daylight hours on Earth Day, April 22, or on April 29 if rain should occur. The council approved of this. According to Davis, the Blanchester Lions Club was the first to volunteer.

• Richard Braley and Wendi Van Buren of the State of Ohio Forestry Division spoke to council about the village becoming a Tree City USA. The program provides the framework necessary for communities to manage and expand their public trees. The council said they would discuss this further in the future.
