DAR recognizes Steven Haines

The George Clinton Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution met at the Cape May Conference Center on Feb. 18 for a luncheon meeting. Regent Mary Jane Johnson opened the meeting with a welcome and introduction of guests. The Opening DAR Ritual followed.

Steven Haines was awarded the DAR Community Service Award for contributions to the community in an outstanding manner through voluntary service and community activities. This award was established by the National Society Daughters of the Revolution Board of Management as an opportunity for chapters and states to recognize worthy individuals and organizations for outstanding unpaid voluntary achievements in cultural, educational, humanitarian, patriotic, historical, citizenship or environmental conservation endeavors.

Mr. Haines is well known in the community for his involvement with music and the arts. He has served on the Board of Directors of the Murphy Theatre and founded and directed two community choirs, “Heart, Music, Change” and “Cantabile.”

Mr. Haines has been the Music Director of the Wilmington Methodist Church for many years. He has led the choir to perform at nursing homes, senior housing facilities and community events. Mr. Haines has brought seasonal music and theater experiences to churches, schools and community events.

A member of the Wilmington Schools Foundation Board for the past eight years, he currently serves as Vice President. The chapter is pleased to recognize Steven Haines for his service to the community.

Following the presentation to Mr. Haines, Shannon Peters was welcomed as a new member.

The President’s General message was read by Joan McGowan while Judy Briggs gave the National Defense Report. Women’s Issues Chair Kaye Stotts suggested that members click on www.stress.org to find out about balancing our health.

Nancy Bernard, Community Schools Chair, thanked members for bringing children’s under clothes to give to class teachers for children in need. Pat McKenzie, DAR Schools Chair, urged members to save and bring Box Tops for Education and Campbell Soup labels to the next meeting. Leslie Holmes, Project Patriot Chair, asked for manufacturer’s coupons to send to commissaries overseas for military families. They can be used by the military for up to six months after expiration.

Bonny Kanyuck, Historian, announced that a DAR grave marker was given to the family of deceased member Regina Swisshelm.

Regent Johnson thanked the hostesses Linda Lee, Linda Bledsoe assisted by Leslie Holmes. The meeting was then adjourned.
