WILMINGTON — Members of the Wilmington High School Scholastic Achievement Council will recognize students from all four grades who meet rigorous academic standards at the annual event to be held at 7 p.m. Monday, May 1 in the Wilmington Middle School gymnasium, according to SAC President Jody Ames.

The public is is welcome and encouraged to attend the event.

In 1957, members of the Scholastic Achievement Council created Phi Delta Sigma, Wilmington High School’s first academic honor society.

College-bound seniors who have maintained membership in the society for four consecutive years and the class’ highest-ranking scholars will receive scholarship money to be used toward tuition at the post-secondary school of their choice. Last year, 15 students received $8,900 in scholarships; in 2015, $13,000 was awarded to 27 students.

These scholarships are funded by the generous support of community members, parents and alumni. Over the years, SAC has raised and awarded more than $285,000 to 648 graduates who represent Wilmington’s future.

Community members and supporters can assist SAC to continue to nurture and encourage our youth by making a tax-deductible contribution to the Scholastic Achievement Council, Julie Billups, Treasurer, 488 Pratt Road, Blanchester, OH 45107.

Addressing this year’s class of 226 members will be distinguished Phi Delta Sigma member and 1988 WHS graduate Chris Summers.

Summers is the owner of VersaMedical LLC, a spine/orthopedic and biologics medical device distributorship located in Lebanon, Ohio.

Serving in SAC leadership are President Jody Ames DDS, Vice President Russ Smethwick, Secretary Terri Roberts, Treasurer Julie Billups, WHS faculty advisor Erin Moore, and at-large members Rachel Boyd, Mary Ann Raizk, Bruce Saunders, Geoffrey Phillips, and Nancy Wolary.
