Editor’s Note: Little Hearts Big Smiles, which has been helping Clinton Countians for more than 10 years as a supportive outlet for families raising special needs children, will host its annual 5K and fun run on May 20.

All proceeds will go to benefit Phase 4 of the Little Hearts Big Smiles Playground on Fife Avenue in Wilmington, which includes the addition of handi-accessible restrooms for children and families.

This year, Little Hearts Big Smiles is rallying participants to show support by joining one of six teams led by a captain: Andrew’s Army; Brei’s Brigade;Team Paxton and Irene; Gracie’s Squad; Team Braydyn; and Abby’s Army.

For six days leading up to the event, the News Journal is profiling the team captains. This is the second profile. More information on the event follows the story.

WILMINGTON — Breianna Wulf is an active 12-year-old who loves attending sports events, going kayaking, spending time at the beach, riding roller coasters, and spending time with her family.

Brei, a Clinton-Massie seventh-grader, has a rare genetic mutation on her DYNC1H1 gene, Cerebral Palsy, and Polymicrogyria.

She is non-verbal and uses a feeding tube for her nutrition. She is very thankful that a local woman developed a formula called Nourish that she can use. Brei’s mom was making her food at home and it was very time-consuming.

Brei uses letter boards to spell out her thoughts. She doesn’t let having a diagnosis get her down. She loves life and lives it to the fullest.

Some of her favorite memories are going whitewater rafting in North Carolina, snow skiing in Colorado, visiting Washington D.C., and surfing in North Carolina.

Brei is one of the original inspirations of the playground project and loves the roller slide most of all. She is very excited to complete the playground project.

Brei is thankful for the support of this community and hopes to see lots of people at the 5K.
