Wilmington Lions celebrate Charter Night

WILMINGTON — The Wilmington Lions Club gavel was passed Monday night, June 19 as newly elected president John Beireis was installed for the year 2017-2018.

Outgoing President Gene Snyder reviewed highlights of the year after Lion Jim Georges conducted protocol for the official beginning and ending of the Charter.

Past President Bob Holmes (1998-1999) presented Melvin Jones Fellowship Awards to Lion members Ruth Stuckey and Kevin Kesterson. Lion Ruth was sponsored by her late husband Roy Joe Stuckey and joined the club October 1, 1998. Lion Kevin was sponsored by Lion Jim Georges and joined on June 1, 2007.

Lions Club International Foundation’s highest honor, the Melvin Jones Fellowship, recognizes those Lions who have made the highest commitment to humanitarian service in their years of service to their club. Over the last 25 years the Wilmington Lions Club has only honored 46 Lions with this award.

Other highlights of the meeting included installation of officers by Lion District Governor Gary DeFayette and closing remarks by President John Beireis.

Members and guests met at the Senior Center on North Nelson Avenue and enjoyed a most delicious dinner of pork chops, mashed potatoes with gravy, mixed vegetables, slaw, and desert of ice cream and cookies.
