Influenza A confirmed

in young child

WILMINGTON — A 3-year-old youth has tested positive for influenza A, the Clinton County health commissioner said Monday.

In the wake of confirmed swine cases among several hogs at the hog barn last week on the Clinton County Fairgrounds, there will be more testing to determine whether this flu is a match to the swine flu, said Clinton County Health Commissioner Pamela Walker-Bauer.

“We do know this child had a history of visiting the hog barn,” Walker-Bauer reported.

The child has been treated with Tamiflu, which is a brand name for an antiviral medicine for treatment of flu, she said.

The additional testing to see whether the child’s flu matches the swine flu involves “a genetic fingerprint, if you will,” said the health commissioner.

It takes two or three days to get the results from this added test.

The response to the child’s case suggests “our message got out,” said Walker-Bauer.

Work set for Farmers Road

Road work will begin on Farmers Road as part of a sight improvement project beginning Wednesday, July 26, weather permitting, the Clinton County Engineer’s Office announced.

The closure is between King Road and SR 350 in Clark Township, and also between SR 350 and Steele Road in Washington Township.

The last address accessible from the south (King Road) is 4685 Farmers Road. The last address accessible from the north (Steele Road) is 4108 Farmers Road. Emergency access and ingress/egress will be provided at all times to addresses within the closure.

State Route 350 will be unaffected.

On-site construction personnel will assist residents who live within the closure area to access their driveways.
