State Route 28 just west of Blanchester was shut down for several hours on Friday morning due to a tractor-trailer fire. The truck from Carthage, Missouri was hauling a trailer full of plywood sheets, destined for Universal Forest Products in Blanchester, according to Harlan Fire & Rescue Chief Andy Mitten. “As the truck proceeded through Harlan Township the driver noticed the the rear trailer tires were on fire,” said MItten. “As she slowed, the tires exploded and set the trailer on fire.” The driver was able to quickly stop and unhook the tractor from the trailer. Harlan Township firefighters were dispatched at 5:56 a.m. with two engines and two tankers to extinguish the fire. The trailer and the contents were destroyed, but there were no injuries. With traffic heavy at that time of the morning, the Ohio Department Of Transportation out of Wilmington, under the direction of Mike Lovelace, responded and shut down all lanes of the highway and directed traffic to alternates roads. Heavy-duty wreckers were called in from Dayton to remove the burned contents and the wreckage from the highway. The Ohio State Highway Patrol handled the investigation. The road is expected to open by around 3 p.m. Friday
