The 60th Class Reunion of the Wilmington High School Class of 1957 was held the weekend of July 28-29, 2017.
On Friday evening classmates and guests gathered at classmate Glenn Dupree’s Maple Grove Campground for a carry-in picnic. The shelterhouse was decorated with orange and black lights (school colors), a large blackboard depicting memories of 1957 welcomed the guests while strains of the recording of the Statler Brothers’ “The Class of ‘57” played in the background.
Forest Goings and Glenn Dupree tended the grills to accompany the many side dishes and desserts class members shared.
On Saturday evening everyone gathered at McCoy’s Catering and enjoyed good weather, beautiful landscaping, wonderful food and good fellowship. The facility was beautifully adorned with orange and black tablecloths and candles.
The Memorial Table was graced with a single red rose (the class flower) along with a listing of the deceased class members and correspondence from classmates that couldn’t attend.
Darrell Pidgeon and his wife came from Parker, Colorado, Gene Bliss and his wife came from Atlanta, Texas and John Hackney and his wife came from Grand Blanc, Michigan.
Each class member was given a beautifully designed booklet listing all the class members, their spouses and addresses prepared by Dan Inlow, and they were given a live orange plant potted in a black container.
They were also given a souvenir bag with a color picture of the old Wilmington High School printed on it. The bag contained a pen and stylist engraved with “Wilmington High School Class of 1957 — 60th Class Reunion.” Also in the bag was a list of 1957 prices including: Gas, 24 cents per gallon; bread, 19 cents per loaf; a new car was $1,800; and the average income was $4,400 per year.
Class members planning the reunion were co-chairmen Bob Webb and Forest Goings, along with Dale Stokes, class president Edith Shiveley Deininger, Glenn Dupree, Gladys Hughes Bobbit, Edward and Barbara Hamilton and Dan Inlow.
