Ohio Charities donates for memorial squad bus

Almost a year ago, a Committee of Post 49 Memorial Squad members was appointed to examine options regarding the Squad’s bus. They determined the cost to repair the current bus was not economically practical, therefore, they recommended it be replaced with a new one at a cost of $60,000.

The members of Wilmington Veterans Post 49 heard the report and concurred.

Starting with the $7,500 donation received in early summer 2016, the members of the memorial squad went to work immediately.

The word went out and the residents, businesses and non-profits in the county responded generously. The members of Post 49 opened their hearts and wallets and the Squad held numerous raffles.

Despite their tireless efforts, the contributions slowed down in April and the funds raised loomed around $49,000 for weeks. The Bus Committee Chairman sent a letter to Ohio Legion Charities and they came through in a big way.

In mid-August, a member of board of Ohio Legion Charities notified Squad Commander Mike Sutton that he had a check for “Bus Campaign” and a few days later he was presented with a check for $5,000, bringing the total to $54,454.

Needing just $5,546, a renewed fundraising effort is underway. Squad Commander Sutton said, “Our objective now, is to have the new bus in service no later than Veterans Day.”
