WMS students are in the news

WILMINGTON — Wilmington students are catching up on local news and much more with the Newspapers In Education (NIE) program through the Wilmington News Journal.

“My classes have thoroughly enjoyed reading the Wilmington News Journal on a daily basis. It has been quite an eye-opening for me as well,” said Shari Murphy, seventh-grade Language Arts teacher at Wilmington Middle School. “Almost one-hundred percent of the students had never read the newspaper, any newspaper, ever. I had to teach them how to read it.”

She added, “They love the Health Department reviews of the local restaurants, reading their horoscope and weather forecast, and the sports page is a big hit. Many of them didn’t know that Wilmington had a newspaper and are shocked it is printed almost every day (especially since we are creating a mini-newspaper for our school and they see all the hard work involved).

The Newspapers in Education program allows local schools the opportunity to give their students access to local news. The News Journal is currently accepting non-profit, tax-deductible donations to keep the program running in local schools for the current school year.
