Author Snyder Skypes to book club

The Wednesday Book Club met at Cape May Oct. 4. Christine Snyder had made arrangements for her son and author Timothy Snyder to speak to the group via Skype.

Jan Blohm set up the communication and led the interview.

Questions concerned his recent book On Tyranny, 20 Lessons From The Twentieth Century.

He spoke of the political considerations and history of tyranny in the past and present.

Some of the lessons of his book are: Do not obey in advance. Beware the one-party state. Remember professional ethics. Be reflective if you must be armed. Be kind to our language. Investigate. Practice corporeal politics. Contribute to good causes. Listen for dangerous words. And. be a patriot.

Following his appearance the members had a lively discussion of the contents of the book.

A business meeting followed with final approval of the club’s bylaws and discussion of future activities.

The next meeting of The Wednesday Book Club with be Nov. 1 with a program by Jennifer Hollon on the history of the Murphy Theater.

Refreshments were served by hostess Debbie Riley.
