WILMINGTON — The trees are changing colors, a crispness is in the air and alumni will be returning to their alma mater — all harbingers of the annual rite of homecoming at Wilmington College. This year’s event will be Saturday, Oct. 14 and the community is invited to join in the festivities.

Homecoming activities start bright and early with the alumni swim meet at 9:30 a.m. at the natatorium, followed by Greek bed races at 10:30 a.m. on Elm St. near Williams Stadium.

The Food Truck Rally on Elm Street will run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and feature Dubtown Smokers, DP Grill and WC’s own Corey Cockerill’s Fertile Grounds Coffee.

Concurrently, from noon through the 2 p.m. football kickoff, the band Coastal Club will perform on the campus mall facing Elm Street. Also during that time, the Center for the Sciences & Agriculture parking lot, at College and Elm streets, has been set aside for tailgating while pumpkin painting for children will be held on the mall.

Kickoff for the Fightin’ Quakers versus Marietta football matchup is 2 p.m. with halftime festivities including the announcement of the Homecoming court and king and queen crowning, as well as the Athletic Hall of Fame induction ceremony.

Sports are always a focal point at homecoming and this year’s schedule is jam-packed starting Friday with the annual Jenna Strong Fall Cross Country Classic (women’s race at 4:30 p.m. and men’s at 5:15 p.m.) at the lower fields. On Saturday, in addition to the football game, the men’s soccer team will take on Marietta with a 7 p.m. kick-off.

Also, this year’s “Hermann Madness” event introducing the 2017-18 basketball teams will be held from 11 p.m. to 1 a.m., in Hermann Court’s Fred Raizk Arena.
