State launches new tool for accessing campaign finance data

COLUMBUS – Ohio Secretary of State Jon Husted this week released a new online tool for accessing campaign contributions and expenditures data maintained by the Secretary of State’s Office.

“This resource brings more accountability to government and our political system,” Secretary Husted said. “The public now can better organize and make sense of the way campaigns are being financed in Ohio.”

The new service, dubbed FACE Ohio, is an application programming interface, or API, for campaign finance data. It provides users with a data feed containing up-to-date campaign contributions and expenditures from the Secretary of State’s website, which can then be analyzed and presented however the user chooses.

To access the data provided by FACE Ohio, users must visit to the API sign up page and provide the requested information at https://faceohio.sos.state.oh.us/ords/faceohio/f?p=500:2:113656191097332::: .

A confirmation email is then sent to the user and includes a key for access. Since FACE Ohio allows users to create customized queries, the key is required to ensure the system is sending the data to the correct place.

It is important to note that the data provided through the API is the same data that is also available through the online, searchable reports under the campaign finance section of the Secretary of State’s website.
