Are you ready for Saint Peter?

Have you ever heard a song on the radio or TV that you just can’t get out of your head? It just plays over and over until you think it will drive you crazy! Then you stop and tell yourself, “OK, I’m not thinking about that song anymore!” Then before you know it, there it is, playing in your mind again!

Well, I am having that problem, but not with a song, with a column that appeared in the July 27 News Journal written by Gary Huffenberger. The column was titled “Churches and Same Sex Couples.” However, a large part of the article was about the Bible. In the article, Gary stated that he is a Christian — a follower of Christ. Huffenberger said that “many of us within Christianity do not regard the Bible as error free, or necessarily having the last word.”

I too am a Christian, a follower of Christ, but I guess the question is, what kind of Christian are you? I believe the Bible, Christ’s Special Handbook to those who believe in Him, is true. Every single word! I believe that Christ inspired men to write the Bible and it is the inspired Word of God. Period. Gary thinks that you just believe the parts that you want to believe.

Let’s pretend. We can see a group of people standing at the gates of Heaven. Off to the right is a large group of people sobbing uncontrollably. Saint Peter appears in front of the pearly gates and asks the first person in line, “Why should I allow you to go through the gates into Heaven?” He answers, “Well, I asked Christ to forgive me of my sin, come into my life, and be my Savior.” Saint Peter smiles and the gates open wide. “Please enter into Heaven!”

The next person steps up. Saint Peter asks the same question. “Why should I allow you to enter Heaven?” The person stuttered, “Well, I heard what the person in front of me said but when I came to that part of the Bible I didn’t believe it.” Saint Peter lowers his head and says, “Please join the group on the right. You cannot enter.” Oops! I guess you need to make sure that you know what not to believe!
