Paris tragedy should prompt action at home

There is no question that the tragedies that took place in Paris last week shook the entire world. It served as yet another reminder of some of the turmoil around the globe and the importance of doing everything in our power to try and keep people safe.

I know I speak for the entire Ohio House when I say that our prayers remain with the victims and their families during this very difficult time.

Following those events, Governor John Kasich urged President Obama not to settle Syrian refugees in Ohio until a more robust and comprehensive screening process is in place in the United States. He was one of several governors to do so.

As Speaker of the Ohio House, I agree with the governor’s request because I believe our top priority needs to be keeping Ohioans and Americans safe.

Some of the terrorists involved in this most recent attack falsely identified themselves as refugees, using that opportunity to then destroy lives and property. As a state and nation, we need to do everything we can to make sure our families, friends and neighbors are safe here at home.

Therefore, I was proud to support House Concurrent Resolution 31, a measure that, like Governor Kasich, urges the president to halt the settlement of Syrian refugees until we know for certain that our screening process and security measures are air-tight. The resolution was sponsored by Rep. Tim Derickson, a legislator from southwest Ohio.

Like Rep. Derickson, I believe there should be no hesitation when it comes to taking precautionary steps that will help keep Ohio and the United States safe.

I believe it is of critical importance that we stand together as a nation and demand that proper steps be taken to mitigate the threat of terror on American soil.

As I said earlier this week, I stand ready and willing to help Governor Kasich in our united mission to keep all Ohioans and Americans safe.
