OWENSVILLE – Clinton-Massie downed the host Rockets 46-27 to take the Clermont Northeastern Girls Holiday Classic crown Tuesday.

Madilyn Newton came off the bench to lead the Falcons (12-1) with 13 points. Classic MVP Miquela Santoro finished with 12 points, seven steals and three assists in a little more than two quarters of action. She had eight points and four steals in the opening period.

Andrea Johnson and McKenzie Cooper led the Rockets with six each.

The Falcons started the game on a 9-0 and blew it open with an 11-0 scoring spree midway through the second quarter to build a 27-7 cushion.

Then Santoro found herself on the bench for the next quarter and a half with foul trouble and next to teammate Madison Purkey who was out after being leveled by a CNE pick.

The Rockets capitalized to trim Massie’s advantage to 30-21 by the 3:12 mark of the third quarter.

The Falcons answered with eight straight points and the Rockets never threatened again.

“That’s the first time we haven’t had (Miquela and Madison). There were some uncertainties. It was a little slow, but we got it back,” CM head coach Carlos Roberts said. “We stepped it up defensively. We started rebounding. We had had that little moment there, but they got themselves together. They all did it collectively.”

Purkey and Emilie Fisher joined Santoro on the all-Classic team.
