WC swim teams fall to Mount Union

ALLIANCE — The Wilmington College men’s and women’s swim teams fell to Mount Union Saturday in Ohio Athletic Conference dual meets.

Senior David Hawk (Edison, OH/Mount Gilead) was responsible for three of Wilmington’s four victories in the men’s meet. He won the 50 freestyle (21.99) and the 100 freestyle (48.85), and teamed with freshman Andrew Stewart (Wilmington, OH/Clinton-Massie), junior Brendan Tirado (Dayton, OH/Oakwood) and sophomore Carter Semenchuk (Rockford, IL/Hononegah) teamed to win the 200 freestyle relay (1:29.43).

Junior Erik Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) had the other event victory, winning the 100 individual medley (57.21).

Junior David Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Princeton) tallied two of Wilmington’s seven second-place finishes. He was second in the 100 backstroke (55.57) and 200 backstroke (2:02.20).

Tirado also had two second-place finish, earning points in the 200 freestyle (1:49.52) and the 500 freestyle (5:09.15).

The other second place finishes were freshman Matt Kitze (Kettering, OH/Fairmont) in the 1000 (10:56.04), sophomore Cody Nash (Fresno, CA/Kingsbery) in the 100 breaststroke (1:06.25) and freshman Andrew Haga (Gahanna, OH/Westerville South) in the 200 butterfly (2:09.18).

For the WC women, sophomore Samantha Glish (Louisville, OH/Ballard) placed second in the 50 freestyle (26.33). Junior Kathryn Spitznogle (Waynesville, OH/Waynesville), who is battling an injury, placed second in the 100 backstroke (1:09.64). Junior Elyse Spraul (Cincinnati, OH/Mount Notre Dame) was third in the 200 backstroke (2:33.6).

Wilmington head coach Trip Breen pointed out the efforts of senior Lydia Wolcott (Miamisburg, OH/Bishop Fenwick), who swam well in the 100 individual medley (1:12.58) and the 200 butterfly (2:35.73).

Wilmington hosts the final dual meet of the season 1 p.m. Saturday against John Carroll. It will mark the final home meet for Hawk, Eric Balash (Canton, OH/Glen Oak), Grant Barnhorst (Marysville, OH/Marysville), Dylan Hammond (Eastlake, OH/North), Cash Harris (Mamtaa, OH/Crestwood) and Curtis Richards (Defiance, OH/Ayersville) on the men’s side and Rachel Drake (Fairfield, OH/Fairfield), Sarah Lynch (Clarksville, OH/Clinton-Massie), Rachel Routzong (Urbana, OH/Urbana), Colleen Rueppel (Middlebury, VT/Manheim (PA)) and Wolcott for the women.
