Stretch run dooms weary Lady ‘Cane in 42-31 loss

WILMINGTON – Dayton Archbishop Carroll scored the last 12 points in a 42-31 victory at Wilmington Monday.

“We got tired for sure. They have a little more depth than we do. Once we got tired, we lost a little bit of that mental focus, started taking some quicker shots and we weren’t as sound in our defense,” WHS head coach Zach Williams said. “The biggest thing, I think, is we ran out of steam.”

Carroll (4-1) led by as much as 16-10 in the first minute of the second quarter. The Hurricane (2-3) rattled off seven straight in the next two minutes to go up 17-16.

For the next 16 minutes, there were eight lead changes and four ties.

“If we had played as hard as we did tonight from the get-go this season, we’d be 4-1. If we continue to play at that effort that we did for the first three and a half quarters, we’ll be just fine this year,” Williams said. “That was the toughest we played, the most mentally engaged they’ve been. Sometimes they need to know they can do it.

“Carroll’s a great team. They’re going to go far this year. They’re well-coached. Their kids play hard. They execute what they have to do. They hit big shots when they needed to. We were right there with them.”

Carroll’s Julia Keller led all scorers with 24 points, 11 of them in the first quarter and nine of them in the fourth quarter. She converted two straight in-bound plays during a 51-second span of the final period to knot the game at 29 and give the Patriots the lead for good, 32-31.

Teammate Allie Stefanek joined Keller in double-figures with 10.

Jasmine Jamiel led the Hurricane with 10 points.
