BBK Final: Edgewood 73 Clinton-Massie 46

ADAMS TOWNSHIP — A Clinton-Massie shooting slump that lasted nearly three quarters gave Edgewood a 73-46 win Tuesday night in a non-league boys basketball game at the Lebanon Road gym.

“We can’t shoot,” CM coach Todd Cook said after the game. “And we shoot in practice all the time.”

The Falcons made just 1 of 19 from three-point range.

“We’re going to see a lot of zone (defense),” Cook admitted.

The loss puts the Falcons at 0-2 while the Cougars move to 2-1.

Tate Olberding had 18 of Massie’s 46 points.

“He’s busting his butt and doing whatever he can,” Cook said.

Nate Baker led with six rebounds while Brendan Lamb had four rebounds and five assists.

John Shepherd paced Edgewood with 20 points and eight rebounds. Caleb Allen had 17 points and seven rebounds. Aaron Frazier scored 18 and blocked six shots. Eric Brooks had eight points, eight rebounds and five assists.

The Falcons trailed 5-2 early then rallied behind Lamb and Olberding to grab a 12-8 lead. The teams were tied at 16-16 early in the second.

Massie then seemed to have a prime opportunity to gain some momentum. A personal foul and technical foul were whistled on Edgewood. The Falcons hit 3 of 4 free throws but turned the ball over on the ensuing possession.

That appeared to spark the Cougars who scored 12 of the next 15 points. Frazier led the way with seven points during the run.

Edgewood, up 30-26 at halftime, made its impact on the offensive glass with 11 offensive rebounds. The Cougars also connected on 6 of 14 three-pointers.

The Falcons, on the other hand, were 0 for 9 beyond the arc in the first half. A 10 for 12 performance at the free throw line kept Massie close.

Clinton-Massie shooting woes continued in the third, hitting on 2 of 13. Massie was 4-25 in the middle two quarters from the floor. Edgewood led 52-34 going to the final period.

An 0 for 11 start from the field for the Falcons in the fourth doomed any comeback chances. After making 6 of 11 in the first quarter, Massie made just 4 of its next 36 attempts. Olberding finally broke the ice with 3:33 to play in the fourth, but Massie was down 64-36.
