WILMINGTON — Controlling the game most of the evening, visiting Springboro defeated Wilmington 56-40 Tuesday at Fred Summers Court in non-league boys basketball action.

Wilmington (3-2) led for just a minute in the game, after scoring seven straight to end the opening period with a 13-11 advantage. That spurt negated Springboro’s 5-0 flurry to open the contest.

The Panthers (2-3) scored 16 of the first 20 points of the second quarter to build their biggest cushion of the half, 25-17 with 3:24 left before the break. The Hurricane managed to cut Springboro’s advantage in half heading into the intermission.

Wilmington got within 33-31 midway through the third quarter. But Springboro scored six of the next eight to rebuild its lead to eight, 41-33, by the end of the period.

Springboro sealed the game by outscoring the Hurricane 13-4 the last five minutes of the contest.

Springboro’s Willieon Yates led all scorers with 18 points. Matt Yim came off the bench to add 12.

Cam Coomer led the Hurricane with 16 while Matt Butcher added 15.
