Demler finishes 11th in state high jump

COLUMBUS — Chris Demler’s first jump in the Div. II Ohio State Track & Field Championship high jump competition Saturday was a good one.

In the end, it was his only successful attempt.

Demler, a junior at Clinton-Massie, finished 11th in the high jump at Jesse Owens Memorial Stadium.

“He’s disappointed,” CM coach Brian Mudd said.

Demler cleared the opening height of 6-0 with relative ease, sending positive vibes to a nervous first-time state jumper.

But on his first attempt at 6-2, Demler slipped as he approached the bar. His next two efforts were “good,” said Mudd, but not successful.

“To come back mentally after that slip was good,” Mudd said. “He had two good jumps on his final two attempts at 6-2. I thought he would make it.”

Despite Demler’s disappointment, Mudd put things into prospective. This was not only Demler’s first trip to state, but his first season of track and field.

“If you would have told us at the beginning of the season that he’d be 11th in the state, I think he would have taken it and not looked back,” said Mudd. “This (state) wasn’t even in our world. Two weeks ago we weren’t even thinking about this (state).”
