Murphy outduels DeWeese, joins Carey in district golf tournament

SPRINGFIELD — Drew Carey had solidified his spot in next week’s district golf tournament as the second individual at Monday’s Div. I Springfield Sectional golf tournament.

Who would join him at the district tournament, however, was not certain as all the scores had been posted after 18 holes at Reid Park Golf Course.

For better or worse, Wilmington teammates Jack Murphy and Hunter DeWeese would face each other in a winner-take-all playoff for a berth in the district tournament.

“The toughest coaching position I’ve ever had to be in,” said WHS coach Phil Gilmore. “Having two wonderful young men and best friends play for the last spot was tough.”

Murphy parred the first hole with a 4 while DeWeese had a 5, giving Murphy a spot in next week’s district tournament, which will be held Thursday at Beavercreek Golf Club.

Wilmington had a 352 team score, good enough for fifth place. The fourth place team of Beavercreek had a 345. The top four teams advanced to the district tournament. Other district qualifying teams were Troy, Springfield and Bellefontaine.

Individually, Michael Green of Tecumseh with an 83, Carey’s 85 and Bradley Calhoun of Tippecanoe with 85 all qualified to the district in the group of the top four individuals not on district qualifying teams.

Cameron Smart had a 95 and Dylan Combs had a 106 for the Hurricane on Monday.

Wilmington finished the year with a 24-9 season record, tripling the number of wins from a year ago.
