Wilmington High School graduate Daniel Harris has been named the 2015 U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association Missouri State Coach of the Year.

Harris the girls track and field coach at the John Burroughs School, a private institution in St. Louis. He has been the girls head coach for 18 years. Harris and the John Burroughs girls team won the program’s first Missouri state girls track and field championship spring, claiming the Class 3 state crown.

State-by-state winners were selected based on their teams’ performances throughout the 2015 track and field season. Among the factors taken into consideration were team score and placement at the state championships, the number of different events in which student-athletes were qualified, individual championships, and how their teams’ performances stacked up to previous years (ex. First title in school history, consecutive titles, etc.).

Each honoree will receive a trophy from the USTFCCCA recognizing his or her achievements.

The winners from each state are in consideration for the association’s National High School Track & Field Coach of the Year award. One boys coach and one girls coach from among all the states will be selected by a panel of experts and be announced later this month as the national winners.

Harris graduated from Wilmington High School in 1989. He is the son of Eleanor Harris of Wilmington and the late Dr. Larry L. Harris.
