Over the course of 20 seconds, the Wilmington College women’s soccer turned a possible loss into a thrilling tie as the Fightin’ Quakers earned a point with a 2-2 draw against Marietta Saturday in Ohio Athletic Conference action at Townsend Field.

Despite dominating the play and the statistics, Wilmington allowed the Pioneers to make the most of their limited scoring opportunities. Marietta scored on its first two shots.

“If you look at the fact we had 36 shots to their three, we put a lot of pressure on them,” said Wilmington head coach Steve Spirk. “We were the better team tonight. We are not making enough of our chances or we wouldn’t have gone down two goals. We scored two goals 20 seconds apart. I think the team showed a lot of character in doing that. But we still have some work to do.”

The Pioneers tallied their first goal nine minutes into the match off a corner kick. MC was able to take the one-goal advantage into half. Marietta added to its lead in the 66th minute with a quick counter attack.

At that point, Wilmington had a 19-2 advantage in shots.

“We were pushing and got exposed on the switch. I give them credit, they switched the field and had a step on our defender,” said Spirk. “Those are the kind of goals we aren’t making right now.”

Senior Erika Good scored Wilmington’s first goal of the game, a laser from about 20 yards out at 77:20. Sophomore Katie Evans and junior Ashley Lovett combined on the assist.

It didn’t take long for the equalizer as Lovett forced a turnover and found senior Taylor Scott for the goal exactly 20 seconds after the initial score.

Wilmington had multiple scoring chances in the box in both overtimes, but simply couldn’t find the back of the net.

Junior Ana Hosler made one save on three shots in 110 minutes.

Wilmington (5-4-4 overall, 0-3-2 OAC) travels to Ohio Northern (10-3 overall, 4-1 OAC) 7 p.m. Tuesday in Ohio Athletic Conference action.
