WEEK 10: Massie motivated to not look beyond Astros

Clinton-Massie is 8-1. East Clinton is 1-8. The Astros haven’t defeated the Falcons since 2001.

Massie motivated? You bet.

Long-time Clinton-Massie had coach Dan McSurley wants his Falcons to continue their stellar play this week and into the post-season.

And he wants his squad to sweep the South Central Ohio League off the books in fine fashion.

“This is the first time we will be talking about the streak and that’s motivation,” said McSurley.

The regular season finale for both teams will kick-off at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Frank Irelan Field.

Clinton-Massie has won each SCOL title since 2006. The Falcons lost just one game in 2005 to unbeaten league champion Miami Trace.

That streak has the Falcons with 58 regular season SCOL wins and an overall 73-2 SCOL record, including 39-1 at FIF. The last SCOL loss for Clinton-Massie was against Washington Senior on Oct. 12, 2007. The only SCOL loss at Frank Irelan Ireland was Clinton-Massie’s first on Sept. 23, 2005.

But the last two league outings for the Falcons have been nailbiters — 14-13 win over Chillicothe in Week 8 and a 23-21 win over Wilmington in Week 9.

“I think our team handled what occurred in the last few minutes of the recent two games with a lot of poise and that should help us going forward,” said McSurley.

A win, McSurley believes, would lock up the overall No. 1 seed in Region 16.

“Our schedule has prepared us pretty well,” said McSurley. “Obviously, playing at home is much better than traveling.”
