Caleb Allen’s last-second three-pointer lifted the Southern State Community College men’s basketball team to an 81-78 win over Hocking College Friday at the Patriot Center.

Jakarr Frey led Southern State with 33 points and 17 rebounds. He came up with 3 steals and dished out 2 assists.

“We isolated freshman Jakarr Frey for the bulk of the game,” SSCC coach Kelvin Gaines said. “He had it rolling all game.”

Southern State led early but Hocking had a one-point lead at halftime. Down the stretch, Southern State tied the game 78-78 with under 10 seconds to play.

But Alec Richardson took a charge and helped turn the ball over to the Patriots, Gaines said. On the ensuing inbound play, Allen dribbled around a screen by Richardson and hit a “fall-away three-pointer from the right corner as time expired,” Gaines said, to give the Patriots the win.

“This was an important game for us, especially from a confidence standpoint,” Gaines said. “We’ve actually played really hard and well enough to compete in the last few games but didn’t execute as well as we would have liked down the stretch to win those games. We have a young unit that will continue to grow as the season continues.”

Allen finished with 17 points, 8 rebounds and 3 assists for the Patriots while Richardson tossed in 14 points. Richardson, a Blanchester High School graduate, had a team-best 5 assists and 2 steals as well.

Cam Carroll, another BHS graduate, came off the bench with 11 points.

On Saturday, the Patriots were defeated by Wright State-Lake 88-79 at the Patriot Center. The final result was close despite 32 turnovers by Southern State.

Frey led SSCC with 33 points on 14 of 22 shooting. He also had 10 rebounds and 2 steals.

Allen had 16 points for the Patriots while Josh Florence came off the bench to pour in 14 points, grab 6 rebounds, hand out 2 assists and come up with 3 steals.
