WHS vs No. 1 Moeller, EC faces Ponitz Saturday night

No. 1 ranked Cincinnati Archbishop Moeller will be in town Saturday night to face Wilmington in the annual Scholastic Play-By-Play Classic event at Fred Summer Court.

The Hurricane (9-5 on the year) will meet the unbeaten 15-0 Crusaders at 8 p.m. Saturday in the third game of the day in the invitational event.

Moeller is ranked No. 1 in the this week’s Associated Press Div. I boys basketball poll.

That Wilmington is playing such a high-ranked team in season is not unusual. WHS head coach Michael Noszka has beefed up the Hurricane regular season non-league schedule during his tenure.

In fact, in the 2015 Scholastic Play-By-Play Classic at Fred Summers Court, Wilmington, No. 2 in the state at the time, met No. 3 Huber Heights Wayne. Behind 32 points from Jaevin Cumberland, the Hurricane defeated the Warriors 65-60.

Ironically, a night after Wilmington and East Clinton play each other at Lees Creek in South Central Ohio League action, the two teams will be back on the same court playing different teams.

The first game Saturday will pit East Clinton against Dayton Ponitz at 4:30 p.m. then Wayne will play Cleveland Heights at 6:15 p.m.

Tickets for the night of basketball are $10 each and are good for all three games. League and/or other passes will not be accepted for admittance.

Also, the Wilmington High School reserve boys basketball team will meet Moeller at 1 p.m. at Fred Summers Court. Tickets for that game are $3 for adults and $2 for students.

The gymnasium will be cleared following the junior varsity contest and before the trio of varsity only games beginning at 4:30 p.m.
