WILMINGTON — Wilmington senior Emily Edingfield capped a 13-4 run early in the fourth quarter as the Lady Hurricane defeated Chillicothe 40-32 Saturday night at Fred Summers Court.

Edingfield was the lone WHS senior honored in pre-game Senior Night festivities.

“Emily played her tail off tonight,” WHS head coach Zach Williams said in his post-game comments.

Edingfield, who beat the second quarter buzzer with a stickback basket, took an inbound pass from freshman Jasmine Jamiel and scored an easy basket early in the fourth to give WHS a 31-24 lead.

Jasmine Jamiel started the 13-4 run with an old-fashioned three-point play at the 4:36 mark of the third period giving WHS a 21-20 lead. The Lady Hurricane would not trail again in the game.

The Lady Cavaliers pulled with 35-32 in the fourth but Faith Sanderson, with an assist to Mya Jackson, scored two, 37-32, and then Jackson went 3 for 4 at the line in the final seconds to seal the win.

The Lady Hurricane, ranked No. 14 in last week’s Div. II Associated Press poll, wraps up the regular season at 17-5 overall and 11-3 in the SCOL. Chillicothe is 12-2 in the SCOL.

“A win like should give our girls great confidence,” Williams said. “The first time we lost to them by 22. We played timid, not aggressive. That’s not us. We can’t play that way. If we play that way, we’ll get beat.”

On a night when points were difficult to come by, freshman Jasmine Jamiel played a key role for the Lady Hurricane.

“Jasmine stepped up,” Williams said. “We’ve been stressing to Jas all year to perform in her role. Distribute the ball, played defense, rebound. In time, the offense will come.

“Tonight I thought she played fearless. She played within herself. She played confident.”

Jamiel finished with 11 points, connecting on 4 of 5 from the field. Mya Jackson, guarded most of the night by 6-0 Ball State-signee Osh Brown, had 14 points, three assists, two rebounds and two assists.

Wilmington was unable to find its shot in the first quarter, connecting on just 1 of 10. WHS trailed 7-1 at one point. Katlyn Jamiel gave the Lady Hurricane spark off the bench but WHS still trailed well into the second period, 14-11.

Jasmine Jamiel drove hard the basket for a layup that tied the game at 14-14 at the 2:18 mark. Leah Frisco had a stickback basket with 45 seconds to go that made it 16-14. Edingfield’s offensive rebound, one of her team-best 10 boards on the night, and buzzer-beating made it 18-16 WHS at the half.

Osh Brown had 15 points, 15 rebounds, three steals and five blocked shots for the Lady Cavaliers. At the 3:10 mark of the third period, the game was stopped as Brown had reached the 1,000-point mark for her CHS career.
