Lady Hurricane rips through Marshall 58-42

LEBANON – A Wilmington-Bellbrook rematch is set after the Hurricane dispatched Thurgood Marshall 58-42 Tuesday in the Division II girls sectional at Lebanon High School.

Bellbook (21-3) came from behind to beat the Hurricane 32-29 on Martin Luther King Day. The rematch is set for 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Lebanon.

The Hurricane (19-5) all but secured the rematch with a dominant third quarter Tuesday. They outscored Thurgood Marshall 21-4 during the final 5:45 of the period. Mya Jackson had three three-point plays in the spurt, two from long-range. The latter of the two, her 19th, 20th and 21st points of the night, was right in the eye of the defender.

“Start to finish, yes,” WHS head coach Zach Williams said when asked if that was his team’s best performance of the season. “We’ve been preaching about taking steps forward and not taking steps back. There were a few moments where we lost focus, but the girls bounced back from that.”

Jackson finished the night with 25 points, despite being on the bench for nearly six minutes of the first half with two fouls.

“She really stepped up. I’m really proud of her,” Williams said. “She had early foul trouble, but she stayed focused. She shot the ball well, got to the rim. It’s probably one of her best performances of the season against some good competition.”

Two other Hurricane, Jasmine Jamiel and Leah Frisco, joined Jackson in double figures with 10 each.

The teams traded 7-0 runs to start the game, with the Cougars (19-5) going up 7-2 and WHS reclaiming the lead at 9-7.

They traded buckets until a Faith Sanderson bomb gave Wilmington the lead for good, 14-13 late in the opening quarter.

The ‘Cane scored the first five points of the next period to go up 19-13. Marshall scored the next four before Jackson let fly a three that just beat the halftime horn.

Thurgood Marshall senior and Ohio University signee Cierra Hooks led the Cougars with 20.
