WC women advance to OAC title game

BEREA – Savannah Hooper scored the final eight points of the first half to propel the Wilmington College women’s basketball team to a 62-59 win over Baldwin-Wallace Thursday in an Ohio Athletic Conference tournament semifinal game.

The victory puts Wilmington in the OAC title game 3 p.m. Saturday at top-seed and unbeaten Ohio Northern, 61-60 winners over Marietta on Thursday. The Polar Bears claimed both meetings this season, winning in Ada 78-51 and claimed the 62-61 overtime victory in Wilmington.

The Fightin’ Quakers (18-9) were led by Hooper who came off the bench to score 15 points, which included a team-best four three-pointers.

“She shot us back into the game and gave us the momentum going into the second half,” said WC head coach Jerry Scheve. “That was all Savannah Hooper time. She played with reckless abandon at the end of the first half and did what we needed to get us back in the game. She was the difference in the game.”

Mackenzie Campbell had 13 points. Mary Moyer, shaking off an injury, led all players with 14 rebounds.

“She did what she needed to do. She had a typical Mary Moyer game,” said Scheve. “She dominated the boards and played good defense.

Neither team stepped up in the opening frame, playing to a 9-9 tie at the end of the quarter.

But the homestanding Yellow Jackets opened up an 18-11 lead at the 6:52 mark of the second period. The difference grew to 25-15 at 5:04. Baldwin-Wallace seemed destined to repeat Saturday’s win.

The Fightin’ Quakers had plenty of fight in them. Campbell started a 15-2 run to end the first half with WC on top 30-27. Savannah Hooper closed out the half with back-to-back three-pointers and then a pair of free throws as the Wilmington High School product scored the final eight points of the period.

Baldwin Wallace regained the lead in the third, 40-36, before Hooper drained yet another three to keep WC within reach, 40-39.

Ashley Andracki connected on a three with just over a minute to play in the third as Wilmington pulled out to a 45-40 advantage.

In the final quarter, Wilmington never trailed, closing out the semifinal win. Moyer’s jumper at 4:31 gave WC a 59-50 lead.

BW made one last run but it was too little, too late.
