KETTERING – Clinton-Massie took control late in the first quarter and never looked back Friday in registering a 62-48 win over Madison in a Div. II sectional tournament game at Fairmont’s Trent Arena.
“To win by 14 and not play like we’ve been capable of playing, you know, that’s a good win,” CM coach Todd Cook said after the game.
The Falcons, 11-12 on the year, will play No. 2 seed Dayton Dunbar 7:30 p.m. Monday at Trent Arena.
“It’s a win and we have two days to compare for a very good Dunbar team,” said Cook. “This is our opportunity to do what we can against them. I feel we can stay in the game but can we stay in the game for four quarters. We’ll do the best job we can.”
Clinton-Massie has won 10 of its last 14 games.
Four Falcons reached double figures in points, with Thomas Myers and Noah Greathouse leading the way with 13 points each. Trey Uetrecht finished with 12 points and Griffin Cook had 11 points.
“Four guys in double figures is tough to defend for the other team,” said Cook. “Our big struggle tonight was scoring. We have to get better at that.”
After an even start, the Falcons put some distance between themselves and the Mohawks late in the first quarter. A 12-3 run to close the quarter, put Massie on top 18-9 after one.
In the second, Todd Cook’s surging squad made it 21-9 before Madison made a run of its own to the cut the difference to 24-16.
But Massie answered by scoring seven of eight points to grab a 36-22 lead. Madison closed within 10 at halftime, 36-26. Greathouse led the red, white and blue with 10 points in the first half.
In the second quarter, a technical fouls were called on Massie’s Griffin Cook and Madison’s Grant Whisman.
In the third, the Falcons maintained control of the game for the biggest part of the period. However, the Mohawks put together a late run and pulled within seven as the quarter came to a close, 46-39.
As the fourth quarter unfolded, neither team displayed much offensive firepower. That was OK for the Falcons who had the lead. Midway through the period, Massie led 54-44.
“We came out, you win by 14 points and I thought it was a very mediocre performance by us tonight,” said Cook. “Good thing is, this team hasn’t had a win in eight or nine years, a tournament win. That was one of the kids’ goals at the beginning of the year, so we accomplished that.”
