Wilmington College hosting D3 Week on campus, in community

The Wilmington College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will be sponsoring events Monday through Friday on campus and in the community in honor of the NCAA Division III Week.

Division III Week is a positive opportunity for all individuals associated with a Division III institution to observe and celebrate the impact athletics and student-athletes have on campus and in the surrounding community.

Division III Week is a strategic initiative that achieves its desired impact from a unity of effort. It harnesses everyone working toward the same goal at the same time to build a greater awareness and understanding of Division III athletics.

Kicking off the week will be a campus cookout 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Wilmington Softball Complex as the Fightin’ Quakers take on rival Mount St. Joseph in a non-conference doubleheader.

On Tuesday, WC student-athletes will head over to the Clinton County Youth Council to volunteer with the organization. The student-athletes will be involved with a number of activities from landscaping to cooking meals to participating in athletic and educational activities.

In conjunction with National Student-Athlete Day on Wednesday, SAAC is encouraging the campus to wear purple in honor of former Wilmington College student-athlete Jenna Parlette. The cross country runner, who was epileptic, passed away after collapsing toward the end of the 2012 season opening race.

Parlette was the epitome of what a Wilmington College student-athlete should strive to become – a top athlete, who was a revered teammate and even better person.

The women’s lacrosse team also hosts Ohio Northern 6:30 p.m. Wednesday.

SAAC is sponsoring a sportsmanship speaker, Stephanie Zonars, 7:30 p.m. Thursday in Boyd Theatre.

Elementary school kids from the Wilmington community are invited to participate in the Elementary School Field Day on the WC Commons from 4 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Friday.

D3 Week will concludes 1 p.m. Saturday as the men’s lacrosse team hosts John Carroll at Williams Stadium.
