ADAMS TOWNSHIP — Two runs in the bottom of the seventh inning Monday lifted Clinton-Massie to a 2-1 win over Hillsboro in South Central Ohio League baseball at Paul Schwamberger Field.
The Falcons scored two runs in the seventh but were not credited with a run batted in. The Indians led 1-0 going into the bottom of the seventh.
JT Wolf began the rally with a one-out single and stole second. On a dribbler up the third base line by Weston Trampler, Wolf was able to score when the throw went wide of first and down the right field line. That tied the game at 1-1.
Cam Collett went in to pinch-run for Trampler and he moved to third on the second out of the inning. Collett scored the winning run on a passed ball with Dana Eichenhorst at the plate.
“I’m just happy to get out of there with a win,” CM coach Brian Camp said.
The win puts Massie at 3-1 overall and 2-0 in league play.
Aric France pitched six sterling innings for the Falcons, scattering four hits and one run. Eichenhorst pitched the seventh and was credited with the win.
“Both pitchers pitched great games,” Camp said. “They both battled.”
The Massie pitchers were backed by strong defense. “We made five or six really nice defensive plays, that either got us out of innings or kept it to a minimum,” said Camp.
David Poynter made three plays in left field, Camp said, that helped Massie stay in the game. One was an over-the-shoulder catch in the sixth that helped keep the Indians lead at 1-0. Wolf threw another would-be Hillsboro run out at the plate in the sixth.
Eichenhorst, before going to the mound, was the catcher for CMHS and threw out one runner trying to steal third and picked another off second.
Massie “squandered” a chance to get out to an early lead in the first inning, with runners on second and third and nobody out. “We just didn’t execute well,” said Camp.
