WILMINGTON — A 10-run third inning propelled state-ranked Clinton-Massie to a 17-1 win over Wilmington Monday in South Central Ohio League softball action at WHS.
The win lifts the Lady Falcons, No. 5 in this week’s Div. II state poll, to 18-1 overall and 9-0 in the league.
Wilmington drops to 8-8 overall and 6-4 in the league.
In addition to Clinton-Massie pounding out 17 hits, Wilmington committed 10 errors in the field.
But the game was tied 0-0 going to the third. Massie’s Taylor Florea and Wilmington’s Olivia Veidt were locked in a pitcher’s duel.
“We started off a little sluggish,” CM coach Anthony Lauer said. “The first two innings we could not put anything together. Going into the third inning we decided we were going to change our approach. That’s when we decided to play a little small ball. We were able to score five runs before Wilmington recorded an out.”
Even though only three of the Lady Falcons runs were earned, it was more than enough for Florea, who struck out nine WHS batters.
“Taylor was on her game again tonight,” Lauer said. “It was good for us to come here and get a win.”
Victoria Sivert had four hits, including a pair of doubles, to lead the Massie offense. Florea had three hits and Kelsey Carter drove in three runs.
