BHS tennis rallies for 5th straight SBCN crown

BLANCHESTER — Despite the 5-0 win, there was a time during Tuesday’s match when Blanchester head coach Matt Sexton wasn’t certain if things were going to go the right way for the Ladycats tennis team.

Up big on two courts, Blan trailed in both doubles matches and third singles player Heather O’Neill was down 0-5 in the first set on her home court.

“It was scary,” said Sexton. “Brooke (Honaker) and Emily (Speakman) played really well. They came out and dominated from beginning to end. Having said that, there was a time … Heather O’Neill started the match down 0-5 and we were down in both doubles so I wasn’t sure if we could pull it out.”

But O’Neill, the lone senior on the team and a true “leader,” Sexton said, led the charge back and with the two doubles victories, the Ladycats clinched their fifth straight Southern Buckeye Conference National Division crown.

“They’ve worked hard from the beginning of the season,” said Sexton. “I’m excited for the girls.”

O’Neill, after trailing 0-5, won 12 of 13 games to claim the win.

Blanchester is 6-7 overall and 5-0 in the National Division. The Ladycats have won 29 straight National Division matches.

BHS will play in the Greater Cincinnati Tennis Coaches Association tournament Thursday and Saturday. Competing in the G Flight, Blanchester will play singles matches at Seven Hills High School and doubles matches at Summit Country Day High School. Play begins 3 p.m. Thursday and continues 8 a.m. Saturday.
